Deeper happiness is the happiness that is sourced within ourselves, no matter what the external circumstances.

The ability to find peace of mind no matter what the situation.

It is the greatest gift of all. And it is possible.

Have you ever had the experience of something which seems to be a disaster at the time, turning out to have such a big silver lining that you end up even feeling grateful that it happened? Of not getting a job, and then being thankful it worked out that way? Of being heartbroken, but ending up feeling fine or even relieved that you split up? In other words, of wishing things were different, but then being glad - or truly peaceful - that they are the way they are? Sometimes this process takes years. All too often it never happens.

What would it be like if you knew how to make this shift in real time? In the middle of the events? Whenever you want?

And not only with the big stuff. Also with the small stuff -- the niggles, the irritations, the daily glitches which drain energy, feel stressful or dampen your mood. In a sense there is no big stuff or little stuff, because peace of mind is an absolute, an all-or-nothing state. It's like being pregnant: you either have it or you don't! You can't be a little bit irritated and still have peace of mind. So if your peace of mind has gone, then it's gone. And what is more important than peace of mind? What's worth anything, without peace of mind?

When I ask people to reflect on how much ongoing peace of mind they actually experience during a day, a frequent answer is "not much". Even if nothing is going on under our noses to perturb us, we are generally turning something over in our thoughts. And so we miss out on the vibrant peace and good feeling of the present moment, as experienced by a calm mind.

What difference would true flexibility and peace of mind make to your home life? To your work life? To your relationships? Think how much energy is wasted feeling frustrated with people or situations outside of your control.

Notice how often your thoughts are turning over the past or anticipating the future. Imagine how it would be if your power and energy were focused on the Now - even when engaged in planning.

Imagine how much more energy, flow and good feeling you could have in your days. And how much more productive and flexible you are when you're feeling content and are in the flow.

We can wait forever for external circumstances to change in order to feel happy or peaceful. We can put endless energy into wishing that other people would change, or into setting bigger and bigger goals to get everything in place just as we want it. And we can never be in control of any of this.

Learning how to feel happiness and peace inside yourself means other people can be the way they are, and nothing has to change in order for you to be happy and at your best.

And the funny thing is, as we change, other people often do change. The whole dynamic changes. Sometimes the whole situation changes. It's a bonus, a by-product of our internal shift.

These are simple but profound skills which you can learn, so you are not dependent on me. All it takes is a little willingness. And it's enjoyable!

I worked with Sarita for just one brief session. I had been feeling rotten, all my adult life, about the effect my mother had on me. Don't get me wrong - my mother meant only the best for me, and I was always able to get along with her, superficially anyway. But the price of 'getting along' has been eating away at me, because I didn't feel that I loved her and I didn't want her to say she loved me. Six years of psychodynamic therapy didn't diminish its power to eat away at me.

Sarita - in a few simple steps - helped me reframe the whole experience of my childhood relationship with my mother and to get in touch with the life that would have been, for her, had she not had such an awful, awful early life herself. So as you finish reading, you might take a moment to notice how much peace of mind you really experience these days... and how many things are just on your mind instead.

What are you simply tolerating in your life?

What do you dwell on and analyze, but never resolve?

There is a famous serenity prayer which says:

"'God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

In fact, many solutions or resolutions involve elements of acceptance, wisdom and action. But when action is needed, it happens much more easily when acceptance and wisdom are in place first. (And sometimes the actions are a little different in this new light...)

In the absence of acceptance and the wisdom acceptance brings, there is often an unpleasant sense of stuckness and procrastination. When we think we know what we need to do - yet we're not doing it - we generally feel pretty frustrated with ourselves. Rather than saying "Just do it!", I'll help you to undo the log-jam in surprising ways.

When we're stressed we can think we don't have time to go around finding acceptance and wisdom before we act. It can all seem a bit fluffy. Yet the truth is this can happen in a matter of moments - and it makes us far more effective.
